Espoo, Finland – Nokia has been recognized as the overall leader in ABI Research’s competitive ranking for Telco Scope 3 Emissions Management, the company announced today. Nokia was awarded with the highest scores in both the implementation and innovation categories. This ranking assesses top telecom vendors based on their efforts, progress and long-term commitment in reducing Scope 3 emissions, the largest contributor to their carbon footprint. These emissions arise from upstream and downstream activities, including customer product usage and supplier operations.
Nokia was recognized for its efforts in reducing the power consumption of its products across its portfolio. This company-wide endeavor is designed to improve energy efficiency and have the greatest direct impact on its carbon footprint. The impact of this work also flows down to the reported emissions of its customers. To further promote circularity, Nokia integrates refurbished and remanufactured products and has a robust program for recycling non-repairable or obsolete equipment with certified recyclers locally.
Another key factor in Nokia’s leadership position, according to ABI Research, is its success in reducing emissions from ‘purchased goods & services’ and ‘upstream transportation’. The company’s leading supplier engagement practices have helped lower supply chain emissions. Nokia has agreed with its suppliers’ ambitious supply chain reduction targets, including achieving net-zero emissions for final assembly suppliers by 2030. Additionally, it continues its efforts in increasing rail and multimodal transportation solutions and improving container fill rates with logistics suppliers.
“Nokia stood out as clear leader in the competitive assessment, establishing itself as a frontrunner in industry efforts to cut Scope 3 emissions. The company outperformed competitors across the board of ten carefully selected innovation and implementation criteria, including Scope 3 Measurement & Reporting, Supplier Engagement, and Strategy Delivery & Governance. By establishing progressive Net Zero targets and embedding sustainability throughout its operations, Nokia is highlighting its dedication to achieving long-term Scope 3 emission reduction,” said Alex McQueen, Sustainable Technologies Analyst at ABI Research.
“The journey towards an energy efficient and sustainable digital future involves collaboration across the value chain. Scope 3 emissions, which contribute to the majority of emissions for most technology companies in our space, is the toughest emission category to address as it involves an unwavering focus on innovation and collaboration. Nokia’s recognition as the overall leader in ABI Research’s Scope 3 Emissions Management ranking validates our firm commitment to net zero by 2040. We remain dedicated to supply chain decarbonization, advancing energy-efficient technologies, and, above all, supporting our customers in their sustainability journeys,” said Subho Mukherjee, Vice President of Sustainability at Nokia.
Nokia’s strong commitment to strategy delivery and governance was noted as sustainability is embedded throughout the company. This approach enables precise measurement and reporting on progress toward ambitious Scope 3 targets. As communications service providers face increasing pressure to create more sustainable, energy-efficient networks, Nokia’s leadership in Scope 3 emissions reduction sets a benchmark for the industry.
Last month, Corporate Knights recognized Nokia as the world's most sustainable telecom and communications company.
