1-Tbit/s (10 x 107 Gbit/s) electronically multiplexed optical signal generation and WDM transmission

We demonstrate the transmission of electronically multiplexed optical signals at a serial data rate of 107 Gbit/s. Ten wavelength channels are modulated to provide 1-Tbit/s total data capacity at a spectral efficiency of 0.7 bits/s/Hz (144- GHz channel spacing). A single-chip optical equalizer compensates for the optical modulator bandwidth limitations for all wavelengths simultaneously and transmission over nonzero dispersion fiber is achieved in both a straight-line 400-km system and in a 1000-km recirculating loop.
