1.3micron laser reliability determination for submarine cable systems.
01 January 1985
The proper design of a reliable submarine cable system is contingent on an accurate knowledge of the reliability of the individual components used. The 1.3micron injection laser, the product of new technology, requires the greatest attention since its reliability has a critical impact on the overall system configuration. Therefore, our 1.3micron laser pre-qualification program has two objectives: First, to define the testing methodology that will accurately evaluate the potential reliability of the laser, and, second, obtain a preliminary indication of laser reliability based on which the system configuration can be designed. Our laser testing methodology involves a combination of step-temperature, step-power, and isothermal testing over the temperature interval between 10C and 80C, and power levels of 1 to 5 mW per facet.
