2 Gbit/sec Signal Amplification at lambda = 1.53microns in an Erbium-Doped Single-Mode Fiber-Amplifier.

The gain, saturation power and noise of an Erbium-doped single- mode travelling-wave fiber-amplifier operating at lambda = 1.53microns have been characterized. Amplification at 2 Gb/sec was demonstrated with up to 17 dB gain for 1x10 sup (-9) bit- error-rate and was shown to be insensitive to the input signal polarization.
