Because of its critical nature and high revenue potential, the incentive to maintain effective and efficient service on an international gateway switch is very high. However, the gateway environment is typically one of the most challenging environments for switch operations. Traffic is shared with many different telephone administrations, carried over many (often trouble-prone) transmission facilities using multiple signing types, and sent to far-end gateways which may have significantly different operations, administration and maintenance (OA&M) practices.
