Accelerated development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has radically altered the urban environment throughout the globe including India. Modern concepts like "Smart Cities" have begun to touch base in India as well. The backbone of such a concept is a hyper-connected society. Internet of Things (IoT) is the philosophy that underwrites this concept on the back of connecting technologies like LTE and 5G. This paper is an attempt to identify the main critical factors that enables the 5G technology to catalyze the growth of the IoT society and in turn, the smart cities. This study is qualitative and quantitative enumeration of all such factors that may lead one to safely conclude that "5G is indeed the primary driver of IoT". Various standard methodologies have been used here and eventually to identify a relational arrangement of the critical factors, Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) methodology has been adopted.
