Abstract: We demonstrate the use of polarization alternation to dramatically improve performance in 42.7-Gb/s WDM transmission. Six channels are transmitted through ten 200-km (39-dB loss) standard-single-mode-fiber spans with amplification provided solely by erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. 2004 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.2330) Fiber optics communications; (060.4080) Modulation; (060.5060) Phase modulation
