A Collection of Useful Expressions and Diagrams for I/Q Modulations
27 June 2003
This talk reports on application-driven approaches to explaining performance impacts of I/Q modulators and is especially targeted to the novice design engineer. Working with sinusoidal baseband signals in the time domain leads to characterization of linear impairments like amplitude and phase error, carrier and sideband suppression, and others. Introducing nonlinearities, like compression effects, show how unwanted intermodulation products grow up. Numerous viewgraphs are given to visualize the impairment expressions. A generalized calculation of spectra employing convolution and delta distributions concludes an excursion of dealing with complete spectra.
