A Compact Multifiber Circuit Pack to Backplane Optical Connector.

The information in this memorandum describes the 9630-Type Lightguide Connector (MAC) and will be submitted for postdeadline presentation to OFC '86 (Conference on Optical Fiber Communication) to be held on February 24-26, 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia. A through-the-backplane, circuit pack optical connector, utilizing a novel alignment mechanism, is described. Up to 18 fibers can be interconnected in a space of 0.5" x 0.6" x 2.26". Average loss is 0.53dB with 50/125 fiber and no index matching material. Laboratory studies of the alignment mechanism with single mode fiber (8.3/125) have shown an average loss of about 0.7dB.
