This paper discusses a cost-effective method for the migration of today's 2nd Generation (2G) wireless Networks in tomorrow's 3rd Generation (3G) wireless networks. An evolution of the core network for voice services is addresses in this paper. The proposed distributed Mobile Switching Center (MSC) architecture is compared with the traditional monolithic MSC and Gateway MSC (GMSC) architecture. Economic results and analysis are presented for the monolithic and the distributed scenarios. A direct comparison clearly shows the cost-effectiveness of the distributed architecture.
