The capability of providing Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees in the form of throughput, delay, and delay jitter is rapidly becoming a "must have" feature in large-capacity packet switches for broadband networks. This capability enables network providers to offer value-added services that require end-to-end traffic guarantees, such as support for real-time applications, virtual private networks, flow separation, and prioritized delivery.
