We are developing a system, called Pegasus, to serve as a foundation for the construction, generation and specification of interactive programming environments (PEs).1 This project is motivated by two trends in the field of PEs: the new potential for highly interactive user interfaces as a result of improvements in workstation hardware, and the ongoing research into models and generation tools to ease the construction of PEs.
