Herein we review several of the milestones in the experimental studies of the fractional quantum Hall effect. These include the observation of a series of odd-denominator fractions, determination of the precision of the quantization of the Hall resistivity, measurement of activation energies for various fractions, the discovery of an even-denominator fraction, and aspects of the magnetotransport data which may result from the fractional charge of the quasiparticles.
