1. INTRODUCTION: Designers of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) face several interesting challenges. Taking as input a prose description of the basic function to be performed by the circuit, the ASIC designer must produce a detailed description of the circuit's components, their interconnections, and, for large circuits, their partitioning into physical packages.
