The evolution of digital transmission systems towards synchronous high speed interconnection among several network nodes requires a new strategy for interoffice transport. Optical fiber provides an ideal medium for this interconnection as its digital capacity is limited primarily by the opto-electronics used as transducers and not the medium itself.
