A Multi-Window Tool for Analyzing Process Defect Data

Defects in factory production can result from many explanatory causes, or their interactions. We will discuss a prototype tool that allows many explanatory variables to be viewed at once in multiple windows on a work-station screen. In the example, we have one window for a Pareto diagram of defect types, four windows each with histograms of proportions defective for explanatory variables, and one window with a control chart showing the number of defects for each unit. The tool allows the user to quickly pick subsets of the units and defect types and dynamically update the window.
