A new constraint on the galactic plane sup 26 Al distribution.

High spectral resolution gamma ray data from four balloon flights over Alice Springs, Australia occurring between 1977 and 1984 have been searched for Galactic plane sup 26 Al 1809 keV line emission. We find an equivalent point source flux from the Galactic Center direction of (1.3 +-0.9)X10 sup (-4) photons cm sup (-2)s sup (-1) consistent with the diffuse source models suggested by HEAO 3 and SMM satellite observations but inconsistent with recent balloon results. The presence of a diffuse source is confirmed with a Galactic Center flux of (3.9+2.0/-1.7)X10 sup (-4) photons cm sup (-2)s sup (-1) rad sup (-1).
