A novel ternary signal coding scheme is proposed for narrowband signals. A timing code specifies positive and negative rectangular pulses as well as a third zero state formed by skipping pulses. The technique has high coding efficiency, low switching rate, operates at only 2× sampling, and is simple to implement. An application example is highlighted for driving Class-S amplifiers used in wireless communications systems, achieving higher efficiency than conventional modulation techniques while exhibiting good spectral characteristics and low error-vector magnitude.
