A Processor Scheduling Design for Gateways in Heterogeneous Data Networks

New Image

Today as data networks proliferate and grow, they are becoming more and more heterogeneous because they tend to implement different protocols. When stations on separate subnetworks wish to communicate with one another, the messages must go through protocol conversion gateways. With the introduction of optical fibers in the networks, transmission delay is becoming a diminishing portion of the overall network delay for data communications. The performance bottleneck is often in the protocol processing in the gateways.
