The theory of linear and decision feedback equalization to mitigate the effects of intersymbol interference (ISI) and noise in digital data transmission is well known.1-4 In this paper, the problem of equalization is cast in a general framework of an ISI canceler aided by past and/or future data values. This general structure is suggested from optimal detection theory and is shown in Fig. 1. The optimal detector of digital data in the presence of additive Gaussian noise and ISI is comprised of a matched filter and an ISI estimator which is used to cancel the 2023 CANCELER N 1 r[t) Fig. 1--Block diagram of data-aided equalization.
