Active Control of Noise Radiated from Small Axial Flow Fans

The primary acoustic noise source associated with most electronic systems is the cooling fan. Conventional methods for reducing noise radiation are becoming less effective because of fundamental thermal considerations. The air flow rates required to cool systems are rising due to the continuing miniaturization of components. As a result, system fan speeds are increasing. Given the strong dependence of acoustic radiation upon fan speed, this scenario is problematic.
