Benefits of different approaches of a wavelength grid for DWDM channels (ITU 50 GHz grid, 12.5 GHz grid, and gridless) in optical networks are studied. OPEX-relevant topics like power consumption and cost of additional (leased) fiber infrastructure are analyzed for mixed-line-rate and adaptive bit rate networks. We show that both network types approach each other for use of 12.5 GHz or flexi-grid.
