Advances in Image Sequence Coding for Video Conferencing and Storage Applications
18 December 1989
The talk will describe recent work on coding of motion video signals at low bit rates as required in Video-Conferencing transmission applications and in storing motion pictures on digital storage media. In addition to the exploitation of motion-compensated prediction, switched interframe/intraframe prediction, transform techniques, and statistical characteristics, special emphasis is put on perceptual aspects. The incorporation of perceptual considerations brings about a considerable improvement in the coder performance, as judged by subjective viewing. Coding algorithms, perceptual considerations, and demonstration of coded image sequences will be presented.
