Lasers emitting near 1.3 and 1.55microns, fabricated using the InGaAsP material system are widely used in many commercial lightwave transmission systems. The information carrying capacity of a transmission system is proportional to the data rate and the desire towards higher data rates is motivated by lower transmission cost per bit of information. Systems operating at 1.7 Gb/s are now commercially available and are being used to carry voice and data. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated error free transmission over 76 km of fiber at 8 Gb/s.
