During the past decade knowledge-based expert systems, KBESs, have been developed by researchers in artificial intelligence to help solve ill-structured problems. KBESs are based on the premise that humans solve problems by recognizing one of many familiar patterns and applying techniques developed previously to deal with that pattern. This tutorial introduces general components of KBESs, enumerates advantages and disadvantages KBESs, discusses two systems, and provides references to several other systems.
