All-IP Architectures in Next Generation Mobile Networks
14 August 2003
This paper outlines the launch architecture for Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) and its evolution from Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) architectures. The issues and solutions are discussed for evolving this architecture towards a truly open architecture and enable the delivery of mass-market speech and IP friendly data and multimedia communications within all-IP mobile networks. The drivers and requirements for the architecture evolution are investigated along with the steps and approaches being taken within the various developments of IP, GPRS and multimedia services. Moreover, a novel all-IP network architecture is presented based on a feasible implementation solution.
