All polarization - maintaining fiber DPSK transmission system experiment.

An all polarization maintaining (PM) fiber heterodyne 1.4 Gbit/s DPSK system experiment is demonstrated. Good and stable polarization extinction ratio (>20 dB) is achieved while using low loss keyed connectors between the various optical components. A bit error rate (BER) lower than 10 sup -9 is measured for both short (10 m) and long (2.6 km) AT&T PM fiber.
