Alternate-Polarization Modulation Formats for 40-Gb/s Systems
01 January 2007
Alternate polarization (APol) modulation formats are reviewed. Simple methods to generate the APol modulation formats are presented. The improved tolerance to intra-channel nonlinear effects of the APol modulation formats is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the APol modulation formats can significantly suppress intra-channel four-wave-mixing (IFWM) and reduce intra-channel cross-phase modulation (IXPM) in both on-off-keying (OOK) and differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) pseudo-linear transmission. In addition, PMD impairments of an APol signal and some special requirements of an APol signal on an optical PMDC are described
