The existence of 'surface type' superstructures at buried interfaces suggests a new type of electronic materials engineering. An example of such a structure is the Si(111)-7 X 7 reconstruction preserved at the alpha-Si/Si(111) interface. We have undertaken a new set of experiments to establish the existence of adsorbate induced reconstructions at buried interfaces.
