An Analysis to Determine Availability Performance in a Network
17 September 1989
With increasing corporate dependence upon teleprocessing, high availability performance has become one of the most important attributes of communications network for data applications. To achieve a "close to perfect" performance, large amounts of money have been spent in provisioning additional and diverse facilities as well as switching devices in a network to carry the data demands during facilities failure. There is clearly a tradeoff of providing a highly reliable network against the economic cost in providing such a network. Determining availability performance is a non-trivial exercise for complex networks.
