An approach to Process Improvement in a Large Software Development Project

The software industry is growing rapidly. Those managing it look for answers to improving the quality of both the process to produce it and the final product. Thus far software engineers have been able to suggest ways to design the product, to write the software, to test the product, and so forth. Still management calls for ways to improve the quality of the product. Although problems existing in software development are well documented, most software developments have allotted neither enough time nor resources to thoroughly investigate factors affecting quality. Quality factors need to be studied as soon as possible before the industry grows any larger and adds more problems to the set of unidentified factors that currently exists. Hayes and Abernathy voice a similar urgency.
