An Economic Perspective on Fiber in the Loop

Widespread deployment of fiber in the loop is a current goal of most major Local Exchange Carriers (LECs). This analysis shows that by 1992, triple-star fiber clusters will be cost competitive with copper loops for providing voice grade services in growth applications. Initial First Cost, although commonly used as an economic measure, is shown to have significant limitations for comparing copper and fiber in growth areas.
