An equation for melting and freezing transition rates.

We derive the reaction rate for melting and freezing, by considering the statistical thermodynamics of an atomically sharp interface with or without an activated intermediate state. The resulting predictions overcome some difficulties inherent in classical kinetic rate theory, and may be of value in laser melting experiments, where temperatures deviate significantly from equilibrium.
