Multiservice communication networks provide integrated digital services by packetizing all traffic and deploying a packet-switched network. Each service demand is characterized by its own resource requirements, protocol procedures, and performance objectives. A key attribute of services is availability. The challenge is to provide the availability advertised for the service and, at the same time, maximize the use of shared network resources. Thus the development of effective algorithms for bandwidth management in multiservice networks is essential. Artificial intelligence techniques can address many of the problems associated with the management of multiservice communication networks.
