An Interactive Graphical Browser for the UNIX(R) File System.
04 November 1988
The hierarchical nature of the UNIX(R) file system allows users to organize information in an intuitive and powerful way [11, 15]. However, interacting with a UNIX file system using only the UNIX utilities `cd' and `ls' leaves a great deal to be desired, especially if the directory structure is large and complex. DBrowse is an interactive graphical directory browser which allows the user to: 1) view the entire structure at one time; 2) browse the structure in several flexible ways; 3) view only a subset of the structure, for example, one containing only `.c' files; and 4) annotate the structure with useful comments. In addition, the browser could be configured as part of a complete interactive environment, so that the files one is browsing could be acted upon or processed in various ways.
