Analysis of wireless sensor sleep mechanism with group arrival queuing model
09 January 2011
This paper develops an analytic model for wireless sensor network node that adopts sleep mechanism. Different from previous works, herein sensor node sleep period is modeled as arrival of group packet rather than server vacation. In addition, how sensor node queuing dynamics is effected by the packets generated during sleep period is particularly investigated. Using the presented model, analytical results for duty cycle, distribution and mean of total queuing delay, distribution and mean of queue length, and other system performance measures can be figured out. Specifically, calculation results for negative-exponentially and mixed-Erlang distributed packet service time are obtained and compared with each other. Moreover, the proposed model enables us to study various tradeoffs between sleep dynamics and system performance. As an example the tradeoff between sleep period duration and queuing delay is illustrated in this paper.
