This paper develops an analytic model to study sensor sleep mechanism. Different from previous works, theoretical analysis herein demonstrates that sleep period can be treated as arrival of group packet rather than server vacation, so that the sensor node can be simply modeled as a continuous service system without sleep. Explicit forms of duty cycle, and means of total queuing delay and queue length are analytically derived based on the proposed model. Furthermore, stability condition is originally presented in this paper and can be applied to prevent performance collapse resulting from unsuitable deployment of sleep mechanism. Then state transition probability configuration is studied under various traffic scenarios and performance requirements. Finally, typical numerical results and elaborate discussions illustrate that the presented analysis approach can serve as feasible guide in sleep mechanism design.
