Antenna, PHY and MAC Design

The Air Interface (AI) represents the complete Radio Access Network (RAN) protocol stack (i.e. PHY/MAC/RLC/PDCP/RRC layers or 5G equivalents) and all related functionalities describing the interaction between infrastructure and device and covering all services, bands, cell types etc. that are expected to characterize the overall 5G system. This chapter covers the lower part of the stack, namely PHY/MAC related technologies, including further aspects such as antenna design. Before heading to the detailed elaborations in subsequent sections, we start with establishing basic design criteria and assumptions. While we keep this chapter more open than the current status of discussions in 3GPP, we still relate to 3GPP where possible and reasonable.
