The design of electromechanical components requires the modeling of multidisciplinary physical problems exhibiting mathematical intractability due to nonlinearities, nonhomogeneities, complex boundary conditions, and irregular geometries. The typical approach used in the past has been to build prototype devices and then experiment with them in the laboratory, trying various design changes and attempting to optimize results by cut-and- try methods.
