Biological Pattern Formation

New Image

A mathematical theory of biological pattern formation was formulated by A. Turing in his classic 1952 paper. Since then his ideas have been applied (and reinvented) in a number of settings which include biological examples (morphogenesis, electrical pulses in nerves and muscles), oscillatory chemical reactions, and hydrodynamic instabilities and flow patterns. Similarities and differences between the various examples will be highlighted.
