Capacity of Multiple-Transmit Multiple-Receive Antenna Architectures
01 December 2002
With the explosive growth of both the wireless industry and the Internet, the demand for mobile wireless data access is expected to increase dramatically in the near future. As a result, the design principles for forthcoming wireless systems will gradually deviate from those used in existing speech-oriented cellular systems. Larger capacities and the ability to support higher and more heterogeneous data rates will be paramount. Given the scarcity and exorbitant cost of radio spectrum, capacities and data rates will have to expand within limited amounts of bandwidth. Consequently, a fundamental figure of merit is the bandwidth efficiency or capacity per unit bandwidth.
