7th November 1988, marks the birth centenary of Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman - C.V. Raman, the discoverer of the Raman Effect. During an extra-ordinarily creative scientific career spanning more than six decades - Raman's first scientific paper was in 1906, his last in 1970! - Raman made a profound impact on the world of science. His place in the 20th century science is securely based on his significant contributions to acoustics, physical optics, magnetism and molecular physics, in particular to elastic and inelastic scattering of light by matter, an area he made very much his own.
