Comment on 'Core Binding Energies for Clusters Deposited on Differnet Insulating Substrates: ESCA Spectra and Theoretical Electronic Structure Studies'

Recently, Parmigiani et al. [1] have presented core level photoemission data for Pt clusters on Teflon and SiO sub 2. They observe core levels shifted to higher binding energies with decreasing cluster size, as has been previously observed for a wide variety of metal clusters on poorly-conducting substrates. They analyze their data, and present theoretical results for Li clusters, to demonstrate that initial state effects dominate the core level shifts while final state effects are negligible.
