Compact and Low-Chirp 80-Gb/s Duobinary Modulator in InP Using Electro-Absorption/Refraction Modulators
01 January 2009
Operating near the band edge, the quantum-confined Stark effect allows for significant phase modulation with a very short modulator. Two such phase modulators can be driven push-pull in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to generate an optical duobinary signal. The accompanying magnitude modulation in the modulators causes a small chirp and can reduce the insertion loss. We demonstrate 85.4-Gb/s optical duobinary generation with low chirp in a fully packaged InP photonic integrated circuit.
