This paper describes a mathematical approach to transistor sizing. The approach picks a set of critical transistors and converts the transistor sizing problem into a nonlinear optimization problem. This problem is then solved by mathematical programming technique. Although experiments show that this approach takes a lot of CPU time to optimize a large circuit, it will be useful in applications where heuristic methods do not work well and optimal design is desired.
