What is UNEXT?

UNEXT will transform networking systems and software the same way UNIX® reshaped computing. Standing for Unified Networking Experience, UNEXT is a self-managing, interactive operating system that treats every network element as a self-contained entity, breaking down the barriers that have traditionally prevented these elements from interoperating.

In Nokia Bell Labs’ view, UNEXT will be a new stage in network software evolution, effectively transforming the network itself into an operating system.

The UNEXT Vision

UNEXT will flatten the many tiers of complexity that have come to define communications today, while extending the reach of networked systems by breaking down barriers that prevent those systems from interoperating. UNEXT has six focus areas.

Autonomous Services

UNEXT will provide automation and autonomy throughout all phases of service’s lifecycle: design, composition, deployment, activation, analysis, maintenance, assurance, operation and termination.

Data & Knowledge Services

The distributed intelligence in UNEXT will touch everything the network touches, automatically creating processes for agile-data and machine-learning operations as well as knowledge and context generation.

Network-Application Symbiosis

With an enriched network-application interface, UNEXT will enhance application performance and network efficiency through dynamic interactions.

Extended Computing Services

UNEXT will orchestrate heterogeneous compute capabilities along the entire device-edge-cloud continuum.

Decentralized Environments

UNEXT will enable secured and trusted orchestration among heterogeneous devices, components, entities and actors.

E2E System Dynamics

As new system properties emerge, UNEXT will capture desired properties such as reliability, security and scalability, while automatically weeding out undesired properties.

“Just as UNIX revolutionized computing, UNEXT could reshape networking.”
