6G architecting tomorrow

6G architecting tomorrow

In May 2024, a first exploration of the 6G standard by 3GPP took place in Rotterdam, setting the stage for the next generation of wireless communications. Now, in just four weeks, the real work begins. More than 800 delegates will gather in Incheon, South Korea, for a two-day workshop to discuss the vision and priorities for both the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core. This pivotal moment marks the start of the industry's collective effort to reach a consensus on the scope of 6G by the end of 2028.

6G scope timeline

Since 2018, Nokia has been at the forefront of fundamental research on 6G technologies. Through various funded projects and collaborations with partners worldwide, we have been testing and refining concepts that will shape the future of wireless communications. These efforts have culminated in a robust and realistic Nokia vision for 6G, one that we believe will transform the way we connect and interact with the world.

In 6G, we expect a seamless integration of the digital, physical, and human worlds, empowered by the transformative potential of AI. From day one, 6G will deliver an evolved architecture and new advancements that provide immediate operational and economic benefits. These initial innovations will not only lay a strong foundation for future 6G developments but also address critical challenges faced today.

Our vision for 6G comprises four main points, each aimed at creating a transformative and future-proof network:

  1. The most impactful network ever: We aim to design a network that drives the best performance by unlocking new spectrum and by streamlining efficiency and innovation. 6G networks will fuel economic growth and technological advancement, creating a connected world like never before.
  2. The most intelligent network ever: Leveraging AI-powered automation, we will revolutionize network design, deployment, optimization, and operation. A 6G AI-native air interface can significantly improve the communication speeds up. This intelligent network will enable seamless connectivity across a multitude of AI-enabled devices and applications, enhancing user experiences and operational efficiency.
  3. The most sustainable network ever: Addressing the growing needs of the digital economy, we are committed to fostering greater equity for people and the planet. Our 6G network will support a low-carbon, circular future, ensuring that sustainability is at the core of our technological advancements.
  4. The most cyber-resilient and secure network ever: In an era of increasing cyber threats, we are proactively anticipating future challenges. Our focus on innovative security measures and pioneering quantum-safe technologies will safeguard the privacy of digital identities, ensuring a secure and resilient network.

Transparency and continuous updates over the next few years are essential as we navigate the evolution of the 6G standard. To keep the industry informed, we will launch a new series of LinkedIn Live sessions, open to everyone. These sessions will complement our 6G white papers, blogs, and our successful landmark event, the Brooklyn 6G Summit. By sharing our insights, we aim to provide early visibility into what to expect from the future 6G standard for those not present in the 3GPP meetings.

As Nokia, we are ready and committed to architecting tomorrow. Just as we have led the way in previous generations of wireless communication, we are humbled to take a leading and guiding role in realizing the 6th generation. Our vision for 6G anticipates the future needs of people, society, enterprises and operators, ensuring that we continue to drive sustainable innovation and connectivity for a better world.

Join us on this exciting and responsible journey as we shape the future of wireless communications. Together, we will create a network that is impactful, intelligent, sustainable and secure, unlocking new possibilities and transforming the way we live, work and connect.

Stay tuned for our upcoming LinkedIn Live sessions and continue to follow our updates as we lead the charge towards a connected future with 6G. At Nokia, we are not just imagining the future; we are architecting it.
