Honoring the 2022 Bell Labs Fellows

2022 Nokia Bell Labs Fellows

The Bell Labs Fellow Award is a singular honor to which top Nokia technical staff can aspire. It’s a unique designation that caps a career of accomplishment.

The Fellowship represents the highest lifetime achievement award at Nokia in the areas of research and development. Only a handful are selected each year and it is reserved for individuals who, over the span of their careers, have made outstanding and sustained contributions to Nokia and the larger communications industry.

Since the program’s inception in 1982, only 341 people have received this esteemed honor. There are just 88 such active recipients among a Nokia R&D community of some 38,000. The newest five Bell Labs Fellows were recognized on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at a ceremony in New Jersey. These four men and one woman are:

  • Matthew Baker of Nokia Standards, Cambridge, UK: Matthew has shown outstanding leadership in radio communications over more than two decades at Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent and Philips. A recognized industry expert with more than 280 published patent families, he has been cited as a fellow for his sustained contributions and industry leadership in radio access network technology standardization for 3G, 4G and 5G systems.
  • Hungkei (Keith) Chow of Bell Labs Core Research, New Jersey, USA: Keith has consistently excelled as a lead system architect for several broadband access and system-on-chip innovations. A leader of the prototype of the world-first full duplex cable access system, he has been cited as a fellow for his leadership and disruptive contributions in the architecture and design of fixed and mobile access systems.
  • Fahim Kawsar of Bell Labs Solutions Research, Cambridge, UK: Fahim is a worldwide leader in mobile computing and pervasive systems who is renowned for having solved some of the industry’s biggest problems. A co-author of more than 160 publications and holder of more than 40 patents, he has been cited as a fellow for his wide-reaching industry impact on mobile computing, pervasive systems and multi-sensory device platforms.
  • Adriana Vasilache of Nokia Technologies, Tampere, Finland: Adriana has developed and successfully standardized leading edge voice and audio technologies for key standards during her 18-year Nokia career. An expert in biomedical and image data compression, she has been cited as a fellow for her sustained innovation and industry leadership in efficient technologies for speech and audio coding.
  • Timo Viero of Mobile Networks, Espoo, Finland: Timo has led the definition of algorithms, architecture and specifications for Nokia LTE and 5G base station products. A 28-year Nokia veteran and holder of 11 granted patents, he has been cited as a fellow for his innovations and technical leadership in implementation of industry leading wireless base station L1 solutions.
