Podcast: Explaining the mysteries of MIMO
MIMO is one of the most critical components of the current generation of wireless communications, but it is also one of the most difficult technologies to comprehend for those unversed in field of radio frequency engineering. In the latest episode of the Future Human Podcast, though, Nokia Bell Labs researcher Stefan Wesemann seeks to unravel the complexities of MIMO while exploring the future possibilities of the technology.
In a discussion with podcast host Sandy Smallens and Bell Labs President Marcus Weldon, Wesemann describes how Bell Labs researchers developed multi-input multiple-output systems and devised the beamforming techniques that allow for the transmission of multiple data streams over the same frequency. Wesemann then goes on to examine massive MIMO systems, powering the next iterations of 5G networks.
The potential of massive MIMO, however, doesn’t just lie in more capacity, reduced interference and increased user numbers. A massive MIMO system’s heightened sensitivity to the exact location of the devices it serves gives it a sense of environmental awareness, which could have many applications besides communications in the future.
