Research network Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN) chooses Nokia for core router upgrade

After extensive tests, the rollout of new generation core routers in the DFN science network has begun. The first construction took place at the Hanover location on the 13th, May 2024. The new IP routers of the type Nokia 7750 Service Routers were procured as part of a Europe-wide award procedure. The new systems are to replace the eight core routers from 2012 and 2015 respectively. The total capacity in the final expansion is 108,000 Gbit/s per chassis, interfaces up to 800 Gbit/s are supported.

Already last year, the "small" device class of the IP platform, the aggregation routers, was modernized. The 58 IP routers used on this platform offer a total capacity of 2,400 Gbit/s per system. In the interaction of both device classes the revamped IP platform will provide sufficient power reserves to be able to reliably serve the future requirements of the participants. Information on the structure of the science network can be found here. https://www.dfn.de/netz/aufbau/
